Puerto de la Cruz
Guide to Puerto de la Cruz, a popular Tenerife resort located in the Orotava Valley.
Puerto de la Cruz - Tenerife - Canary Islands
Lying at the mouth of the Orotava Valley, on the north coast of Tenerife, the town and coastal resort of Puerto de la Cruz is one of the largest tourist developments on the island. Still preserving much of its original Canaries charm, the town has a resident population of around 32,000 and provides a pleasant mix of holiday resort and traditional Canarian town.
Puerto de la Cruz History: Originally founded as the port for the town of La Orotava, in the 17th century, Puerto de la Cruz was at first called Puerto de la Orotava, only taking its current name in 1831. The port was primarily developed as a shipping point for the Tenerife wine trade, but as this trade fell into decline, so did the significance of the port, and as it was inferior and more dangerous for shipping than the harbour at Santa de la Cruz, most of its shipping operations swithched to the bigger port.
Only at the end of the 19th century, did an emerging tourist trade begin in Puerto de la Cruz, this trickle turning to a flood by the middle of the 20th century, as cheaper flights and package tours allowed the working man and his family to take holidays abroad.

Puerto de la Cruz Beaches: The natural beaches around Puerto de la Cruz, made of black volcanic sand, were not ideal for the tourist trade, due mostly to the less than safe swimming conditions experienced on Tenerife’s northern coast.
Therefore a number of artificial or man made beaches and seawater pools have been created to alleviate the needs of its many thousands of visitors.
One of the best of these Puerto de la Cruz beaches is Playa Jardin, located to the west of the town centre, with an underwater breakwater to calm down the rough seas and make swimming possible. Its wide areas of palm lined sand providing an ideal spot for sunbathing, swimming and water sports.
At Costa Martianez there is an artificial seawater pool with 27,000 cubic metres of water. Playa Martianez is around 200 metres long and is popular with surfers.
